Over the course of the last two decades, dental implant technology has advanced to be used in many different applications. One of the more convenient develops is the ability of denture implants as anchor points for a removable set of dentures. The number of anchor points you need will depend on several factors. Most people will have four to six, depending on the shape of their jaw.

It’s not uncommon for your dentist to refer you to a specialist such as a periodontist or oral surgeon to perform the implant procedure. At the initial appointment they will take a few X-rays or perform a CT scan to get a clear understanding of the available bone structure in your jaw. If you don’t have sufficient bone structure to mount the implants they might recommend you receive a bone graft first.

The denture implant procedure is usually performed on outpatient basis, where you will be deeply sedated. You will need to arrange to have someone drive you and possibly help out at home while you get back on your feet.

The procedure involves an oral surgeon making a narrow channel in your jawbone for each implant. A titanium abutment is then screwed into the channel, then covered with temporary caps.

Once your gums are healed and all of the abutments are fused to your jawbone, your dentist can fit you for a new set of custom dentures, and new locking hardware. This system of anchor points will give you a tight secure fit while offering you the same function that your natural teeth once did.
