Your tooth enamel is very durable and strong. However, it’s still not unheard of for an accident a hard fall or a blow to crack or severely the enamel layer of one or more teeth. If a cracked tooth includes a sharp pain or dull ache, it probably means the crack extends into the interior of the tooth.

Even if the crack is limited to the enamel layer of the tooth you should still have Dr. Nathan Schwartz examine the tooth to assess whether it should be restored with a crown.

Dr. Nathan Schwartz will start by examining the tooth, to assess the extent of the damage. If the area of decay extends deep down into the internal structures of the tooth, you might need a root canal to restore sufficient structure to mount a crown.

Then Dr. Nathan Schwartz will form an abutment by removing the majority of the enamel layer. This leaves behind a small amount to protect the interior of the tooth. This abutment, will later serve to anchor your permanent crown in place.

Finally, Dr. Nathan Schwartz will form an impression of the abutment, and the surrounding teeth. This will be sent to a dental lab, that makes your new crown. A temporary crown is placed over the abutment to keep it safe, while you wait for the dental lab to complete your new crown.

Dr. Nathan Schwartz will call you in for a brief follow up appointment. The temporary crown is removed and he will cement your permanent crown is cemented in place.

If you have a cracked or fractured tooth, it need to be restored as soon as possible. You should call Dr. Nathan Schwartz to schedule an appointment.
